Every 100-150 years, a new age of magic dawns, challenging the notions of all the old doctrines held by any given era of magicians. Strange/Defenders 2099 is about the next cyclical age of magic. As the 20th Century was beginning, the old ways of magic, animism, spirituality, and the like were being replaced with new methods, including technomancy.

Now, by 2099, the time has come again for the next Age of Magic.
 
In the mean time, the monster which possesses Strange 2099 is possessed in turn by the Earth itself. Strange is to usher in the new age of natural magic, turning away from corporations, high rises and the general urbanisation of the world –
 
Although, this is easier said than done.
